Some electrical faults are obvious. Many aren't. An RCD that trips once a week, a socket that works only some of the time, lights that flicker when the kettle goes on — these intermittent problems need patient, methodical testing to track down, not guesswork.
We use proper test equipment to isolate the fault circuit by circuit, then locate and repair the cause, whether it's a loose connection, a damaged cable, moisture in an outdoor fitting or a failing appliance. You'll get a clear explanation of what was wrong and what we did.
When to call us
- Sockets or lights that have stopped working
- Lights flickering, dimming or buzzing
- An RCD that trips at random or overnight
- Switches or sockets that feel warm
- A circuit that died after building, plastering or flooring work
- Outdoor lights or sockets that trip the board when it rains
What's involved
- 1Discussion of symptoms, timing and recent work
- 2Circuit-by-circuit isolation and testing
- 3Insulation resistance and continuity testing to pinpoint the fault
- 4Repair or replacement of damaged accessories, connections and cable sections
- 5Re-test and confirmation that the circuit is safe
- 6Advice on whether any wider issues need attention
Good to know
Appliances are a common culprit
A faulty appliance — often a kettle, washing machine, oven element or outdoor equipment — can trip an RCD. Unplugging everything and reconnecting items one at a time can help narrow the problem down before we arrive.
Recent work matters
If the fault appeared after a picture was hung, a floor was fitted or a wall was drilled, tell us. A damaged cable in the wall is a common cause and knowing where the work was done saves time.
How much does electrical fault finding cost?
Every job is different, so we price it once we understand what's needed. The main factors are:
- Whether the fault is constant or intermittent
- Number of circuits that need testing
- Access to cables, junction boxes and the consumer unit
- Whether floors or walls need opening to reach a damaged cable
- Parts required for the repair
We explain charges before we attend and agree the price of any work with you before it starts. Sending photos in advance helps us quote more accurately.
Electrical Fault Finding & Repairs: FAQs
Why is my electrical fault intermittent?
Intermittent faults are often caused by loose connections that heat and cool, moisture that comes and goes with the weather, or an appliance that only faults under load. They need systematic testing rather than a quick visual check.
Can you always find the fault on the first visit?
Most faults can be found on the first visit. Some intermittent faults only show themselves under certain conditions, in which case we'll explain what we've ruled out and agree the next step with you.
Will you need to lift floors or cut into walls?
Only if testing shows the fault is in a concealed cable, and never without discussing it with you first. Where possible we'll repair at accessible points or suggest a less disruptive alternative route.
